What are Sprayed Edge Books?

A sprayed edge book is a book with colour or artwork applied to the exposed edges of its pages, transforming an otherwise plain part of the book into a decorative feature.

Sprayed edges have become a popular detail on special editions and collector's books, but they can also be added to existing books as a custom finish.

At Spray & Rebind Studio, I create both ready-made sprayed edge books and custom sprayed edge designs for customers who want to give a favourite book a more personal finish.

What Are the Edges of a Book?

When a book is closed, you can see three exposed areas of the page block: the top, bottom and fore edge.

These areas are usually left uncoloured, but they can be transformed with colour or artwork.

A sprayed edge adds colour to these exposed pages, creating a striking detail that can complement the cover or introduce an entirely different visual element.

Why Do People Like Sprayed Edge Books?

A sprayed edge can make a book feel much more special without changing the story inside it.

A simple colour can create a clean, elegant finish, while a more detailed design can become an extension of the artwork on the cover.

Sprayed edges are particularly popular for:

  • Special editions

  • Collector's books

  • Fantasy and romantasy books

  • Bookish gifts

  • Custom book rebinds

  • Favourite books

  • Personalised books

Can Sprayed Edges Be Customised?

Yes.

Custom sprayed edges can be designed around your preferred colours, themes and ideas.

For example, a design might take inspiration from the setting of a novel, a character, a symbol, a particular colour palette or simply your favourite colours.

The possibilities depend on the book and the design, but the aim is always to create something that feels connected to the finished book.

How Are Sprayed Edges Made?

The book is carefully prepared before the edges are sprayed.

The page block needs to be held securely and prepared so that the finish can be applied evenly.

Once the sprayed design is complete, the edges are sealed and finished to help prevent sticking and minimise transfer.

Every book is then checked by hand before it leaves the studio.

Can I Have My Own Book's Edges Sprayed?

Yes.

If you already own a book you'd like to transform, you can commission custom sprayed edges rather than buying a completely new edition.

If you're unsure whether your book is suitable, get in touch before ordering.
